Things just got spicy between California and the feds. So here’s the deal: after some wild protests in Los Angeles—sparked mostly by immigration raids—Trump decided to step in, big time. On June 7, he ordered about 4,000 National Guard troops in California under federal control, and even added 700 Marines to protect federal buildings. His reasoning? Too much chaos and not enough local control. Protesters were apparently targeting ICE facilities and federal agents, and he wasn’t having it.
Governor Newsom, of course, wasn’t gonna just let that slide. He sued, saying Trump had no right to just snatch control like that without California’s approval. And guess what? A federal judge actually agreed with him at first. Judge Breyer said, basically, “Yeah, this isn’t a full-on rebellion, so Trump probably overstepped.”
But then came the twist. On June 19, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals hit pause on that decision and said Trump can keep control of the Guard—for now. They’re gonna take more time to figure this out, but in the meantime, the feds stay in charge. Their argument? Violence against federal personnel is serious enough that Trump might’ve been within his legal rights. They referenced Title 10, which lets the president federalize the Guard in certain situations.
This has turned into a real tug-of-war. California says Trump should’ve worked with the state and not acted like a one-man army. The court is like, “Eh, maybe—but national security, ya know?” There’s also a separate hearing coming soon about whether this whole thing violates the Posse Comitatus Act—you know, the one that says you can’t use military forces for civilian law enforcement. That could really shake things up.
Meanwhile, Trump jumped on Truth Social and posted a big ol’ “BIG WIN,” acting like he just scored the winning touchdown. Newsom fired back, basically calling him a wannabe king and saying the fight isn’t over. And LA’s mayor is just trying to calm everybody down while troops still roll through downtown.
So yeah… Trump’s in charge for now, but this isn’t done. More hearings, more drama, and maybe a trip to the Supreme Court if things get even messier.
